  PUFFY VELCRO

This is the sad story of Puffy Velcro. Puffy was a owner surrender on March 17th, the person that surrendered him had found him back in January & she had tried to find his owners but couldn’t so she called me. She was going to turn him over to us at that time but changed her mind because he was just so sweet she decided to keep him. She took him to a vet in Ft Worth & got his shots had him checked for heartworms & she was told he was negative so she gave him the Proheart 6 shot so he would up to date for six months. She took him home & about two weeks later she noticed he had blood in his urine. She took him back to the vet & they gave her antibiotics to give him & he seemed to get over it. Then about a week later she noticed he was bleeding again so she called me to see if we could take him. She is on a fixed income & had already spent several hundred dollars on him. We picked Puffy up on Wednesday, took him to our vet, got him on more antibiotics & had blood work done. We brought him home but I noticed he’s breathing was labored & it was almost like he was panting with his mouth closed. I took him back to the vet on Thursday & his blood work indicated he was anemic so we got a blood building tonic for him & found he also had a heart murmur. Saturday Puffy was feeling very bad he just lay around & didn’t really want to even walk. On Sunday our club president Dr. Frances came by & checked on Puffy but he seemed a little better until that evening when I took his temperature it was 96. Way too low. I decided to get him to the Emergency Hospital. They kept him there overnight & gave him fluids did a x-ray & when I picked him up Monday morning they told me he had an enlarged heart too. I took puffy to our vet & they checked him out & kept him. They did a heartworm test to see if he had Ehrilicia & he had that & heartworms. I was so shocked. I couldn’t believe it.

They took Puffy out on Tuesday morning for a bathroom break & when they got him back in he collapsed & died.

This has been a terrible & needless experience. Puffy should have never been given the Proheart 6 shot. He suffered needlessly because of someone’s incompetence.

Proheart 6 has caused the death of many healthy dogs although they can’t prove it. Anyone considering this form of heartworm preventative should do lots of research. We will not recommend it to anyone & will put a clause in our adoption contract that it cannot be used on our rescues. Please be informed.
