Alex

What can we say? Alex is a great dog but with a multitude of problems. Alex came to us from the Humane Society of North Texas with many ailments. First of all he was not neutered, he had a BB in his chest, an eye that looked like it came out of the twilight zone, and heart worm positive. He seems to have been an outside dog as he did not know how to enter the house. He did not know how to give kisses and did not know what petting was all about. He seemed to have not had any attention at all, just a backyard dog. He has gotten over a lot of this and is beginning to come out of his shell. He is a real lover boy now.

Alex is about 2 years old and is a large boston, about 30 pounds. He is in great shape except for the above which we will take care of.

Alex’s left eye was removed on 2/4/04 after 3 consultations with different doctors, he was also neutered, and the BB removed from his chest. His recovery from this will take about a month and then he will undergo heartworm treatment resulting in another month of confinement.

We tested his eye for pressure and it was very high, testing 40 with a normal being 20-25.  We do not know what happened to it but we do know that it would be a never ending problem for him and his owner if he retained it, thus we had it removed. The picture pretty much says it all. Below is a picture of his eye after we had treated it for 2 weeks.

Any donations for Alex's care would be greatly appreciated

Alex is doing great after about 2-3 weeks recovery. He has really turned into one of the 'guys'. He loves to romp and play with his buddies and keep the toy away for them. The loss of the eye and the loss and the pain contributed to it has done amazing things for his personality.

You would never know he was missing an eye.
Alex would be ready for his furever home except for the fact he is heartworm positive. He had his first treatment today and should be available in about a month. If you are looking for a lively pet that loves those tummy rubbings then Alex is for you. All he wants to do is please.

Alex has gone to his furever home a little early. Here in a transcript from his new mommy.

Well, where to begin:

Yesterday morning when I left to go to work, I left Alex in the kitchen
behind a baby gate....  Roof and Spike were in the hallway/bathroom behind
another baby gate... When I got home I had an empty kitchen, baby gate
still in place...and 3 dogs behind the babygate in the hall....  Alex is
either a climber or a jumper....  there was no blood or guts-no sign of a
struggle, nothing was destroyed ...  so I guess the three of them are
 going
to get along.  Today they are all in the hall, bathroom area..  tomorrow I
will give them run of the kitchen-livingroom...

Kisses:   Terry is at two,  Brandon is 3 to 4 and I have managed 6...   He
kisses Brandon when they play-- He kisses Terry when the mood strikes
 him--
I get kisses just because and for no reason..

Bedtime:  Bedtime on Sunday Night was funny---  Alex has decided he is my
dog...Roofus is jealous.  Sunday night Roof gets in bed, and gives me
 Puppy
Love, goes under the covers to "night night"..  Alex is right there, he is
so close to me he is actually almost underneath me.  During the night he
manages to get his head on the pillow, but is still close enough to me
 that
you can't get a pin between us.     Last Night, Bed time was not nearly as
much fun....Roof goes through our regular nightly routine, puppy love &
night night under the covers... Alex got his head rubbed, his ears
scratched, and then stretches out at the foot of the bed with his head on
my feet.  When Terry came to bed he had to have his back rubbed and his
belly, then again stretched out on the foot of the bed, closest to me....
Theo lays between us on the pillows with his back as close to Terry as it
 will get.

Feed time:  Right now it is wild.  Alex is behind a gate at the Island in
the kitchen while the other two are in their regular spots...Alex eats
faster than Roof and Spike so he finishes ahead of them. Alex is not
getting the same food as Roof and Spike and I will more than likely keep
him on the regular Science diet and the canned food.  Spike and Roof get
the Science Diet RD because they are fat...one of these days, I hope to
 put
all 3 on the same food, and hopefully  Alex will stay slender...

PlayTime:  Ever seen Three Bostons with a tug of war toy?  One in the
middle of the toy (Alex) and one on each end...growl, growl, tail wags
 etc.
Funny as all get out...  Alex is a barker to get attention....I have got
 to
figure out how to stop that as I don't want Roofus and Spike to pick up on
 the habit.

30 minutes each day is spent one on one (both terry and I) with Alex...
Then we spend the same amount of time with Roof and Spike and Alex...
 Roof
& Spike get their  one on one also, when we have Alex with one dog and one
of us....  An hour to an hour and a half with our boys.  Alex is adapting
to the 15 ft. cable ... as soon as we get the fence in the front, the
 cable
will not be necessary except when we go camping, all three will then be on
a cable or a leash, as the parks always have leash laws.

Friday, if the vet is open, I will go and get Alex his HeartGuard
Plus...have him weighed, and give the vet his records.  I am going to try
to get by a PetsMart with Alex.  I want him to have another collar and
perhaps a harness.. no offense but I don't like the plastic fasteners on
collars/harnesses... Roof and Spike have broken so many of them...Leather
collars are too stiff, although, Roof has one.  He doesn't wear his collar
except when we go places.  He was so used to the 15 ft cable when he was a
puppy,he never goes past the ditch.. (the only time he did was when mother
let him out in the front without the cable and he chased a car..she chased
 him with flyswatter,)

We are under the impression that  Alex has settled in just fine.  We both
are very taken with him..and he seems to like Terry ok, Brandon really
well, and he is quite taken with me..  He will sit in Terry's lap, but
 only
if I am within eyesight.  If I get in the other room, he is down and
looking for me.  Don't know if this will continue, but for right now I seem
to be his security blanket, and of course I give him hugs, pats, belly
rubs, and ear scratches... then I just plain cuddle with him and let him
put his head on my shoulder...  He is a gorgeous dog without the eye, I
 can
only imagine had he been taken better care of, and had not lost the eye
 due
the pressure, he would have been even more so...  We are so proud to have
him in our home and in our family.

Going to attempt to get pictures this weekend in the bluebonnets of the
three terrors for the calendar, and will bring them to the picnic.  I'd
like all three together, but if not, I will be submitting two or three
 pictures.

 See you at the picnic!

Glenda, Terry, Roofus, Spike & Alex
