Well, this is getting to be quite a saga. When we first started this
page we had no idea as to the response we would be receiving from
it. We want to thank everyone for there participation here.
Barkley is doing great. At the end of the last page we had just
taken him to the vet again because he seemed to be having some kind
of respitory problem. He was put on an antibiotic and continues to
take it now. Dr. Timm is not sure what is causing his runny nose and
intermittent cough. He believes it is caused by allergies. I guess
time will tell. He continues to grow his coat and the brindle in him
is really beginning to grow out. It's really hard to believe how
much he has changed in the last 7 weeks. His friends at the vet
thought we had brought in another dog.
Other news is that he went and had another dip yesterday so he has
been feeling a little blue since. The good news is that he tested
negative again for mange. That's twice in a row and is a real
milestone in order to make him adoptable. Also he will go for his
next dip again in two weeks but will be tested first and if he is
still negative will not have to be dipped. That would be great
because these dips really knock him down.
As you all know, the club would never adopt a dog out unless they
have been spayed or neutered. Dr. Timm will not neuter a dog sooner
than four months after their last negative test because of the great
possibility of relapse. Through our experience this is
a wise decision to make.

It seems like I forgot to mention to all our followers about
Barkley's weight. This guy is going to be one big Boston terrier if
he does not slow down. When he was weighed this week the guy came in
at 22.9 pounds. Let's be realistic and call it 23 pounds. That is a
hefty boston for being only 7 months old. Perhaps we need to change
his listing to Boston Mastiff. Any females out there interested?

“Hi guys, I’m back. Well I guess that you all know by now that I
tested negative again and that I may not have to have another dip.
That’s the best news I’ve had in a long time. Sunday, the club had a
fund raising picnic and I got to go. Zack and Zoe got to go too. We
had so much fun. There were at least 50 other dogs there and we all
got along just fine. We had contests for best costume, biggest
boston, littlest boston, and
for the boston with the biggest ears. Guess what? I won the contest
for the biggest ears.
I guess I probably could win for the biggest feet too. Anyway, there
sure were a lot of people there that knew me but I didn’t know them.
They all told me how good I was looking and many said that I had
made a remarkable recovery. I’ve never seen so many bostons in the
same place. Big ones, little ones, all shapes and sizes were there.
It was the best time I have ever had. There were also a lot of
adopted dogs there. I’m so glad that
people adopt dogs like me cause we wouldn’t have any place else to
go. I also got
to meet two other bostons that use to live with mom and dad. Their
names are Cysco
and Tanner and they both say that they sure love their new forever
homes and their forever moms and dads. Dad says that we will try and
get some pictures of me pretty
soon so you all can see how much better I look. Well I’m going to
go, I know there’s some trouble I can cause somewhere. I’ll be
baaaack.”

Hi
there, these pictures are not that good but what I am trying to do
is show how good this guys coat is coming in. As you can see his
brindle markings are really beginning to be very apparent. As
Barkley said,
we had a fundraising picnic last sunday and he got to meet many new
friends. Most people could not believe that this was the same dog
they had been reading about because he just does not look like the
same dog of only 8 weeks ago. He has certainly made a remarkable
recovery. Zack and Zoe continue to teach him all these nasty little
boston habits so we know he is going to wind up with a great (?)
personality.
We truly want to thank all those that participated in the picnic.
Without your support, N.T.B.T.C., could
not exist and we would never see such a fine example of our rescue
efforts.
To all those that have sent him a message we also say thanks. We
receive mail from all over that shows us how many people are out
there rooting for him.
10/17/01
Good news and bad news to report on Barkley’s condition. Last
Sunday he woke up in the morning with rapid and shallow breathing.
He did not look well at all. We put in a call to Dr. Timm but by the
time he called back Barkley seemed to have improved so we were told
to just watch him. Later in the day he seemed to be digressing so we
put in another call and Timm asked us if his tongue was blue. After
checking we realized that it was a little blue so he was probably
having a chest problem. We were told to take him to a facility that
had an oxygen cage. However he improved so much in the next hour
that Barbara decided to
take him out to see Dr. Frances, our friend and fellow club member,
before he went to the hospital. Frances said that it was probably
sinuses and it was making him nauseated and gave him some
medication. Everything seemed to be going well until Barbara took
him to the vet today for his mange test and possible dip. Well the
good news is that he tested negative for mange and did not require a
follow up dip but with a further examination and a chest x-ray it
was discovered that he had a slight case of pneumonia. Neither Timm
nor Frances could hear the congestion in his chest. This is probably
the reason he has had a runny nose and a slight hack all along. Will
this guy's suffering ever end? He has been doing great so far and
now we have to watch him for this. It’s really sad because all this
could have been avoided if only someone would have paid some
attention to him when he was small. His coat is in full bloom and
the brindle is showing nicely now. He is certainly going to be a big
boston as he weighed in at 24.5 pounds today. We were very happy
about the fact that he did not need another dip because of how bad
that makes him feel.
Stay tuned with us and we will let you know how he is doing in a few
days. Thanks to all of you for all your support.

"Hi guys,
mom and dad just took these pictures. They say I'm lookin pretty
good even though I got a little pneumonia. I feel ok today and I'm
takin my medicine. Hopefully I'll get over this stuff pretty soon."
10/26/01
"Hi, it's me Barkley again. I'm feeling pretty good but I still have
my cough so I still have to take those nasty antibiotics. Anyway
it's probably good for me especially after the stupid stunt I pulled
yesterday. Dad said I almost scared him to death. You see there's
this pond next to the house and this time of year it has this green
stuff on top of it and if you ask me, it looks like grass. Anyway I
was chasing this bug and I thought I had plenty of room to run. Well
you guessed it, the next thing I knew was that I did not have a clue
where I was at. All I knew was that it sure was awful wet. I really
don't want to do that again. I did find out, though, that I know how
to swim. Dad said my eyes were as big as saucers when I was trying
to get back to the bank. That's about all I've got to say right now
except that I really like the mail I've been getting from all my new
friends."
11/5/01
Barkley's health is not as good as it should be. It seems that it is
a, let's see what it is going to be today. Barb and I had thought he
was doing great but he still has this respitory problem. He did get
over the last case of pneumonia but continues to show the same
signs. We had him tested for allergic bronchitis and the test came
back negative but the blood work also showed that his white blood
count was very high. We were told to start the antibiotics again and
to watch him closely because he was fighting off a relapse of
pneumonia. We really hope his immune system gets better fast,
however it does not appear to be doing so. Dr. Frances has told us
that sometimes it takes a long time to happen. She did assure that
it will get better but may never be 100%. He went down and had his
picture taken with Santa Claus yesterday but we took him home before
he could meet any of his friends because we did not want him exposed
to anything new. He's doing great today and he really wants to thank
all of you that are supporting him,
especially those of you that are helping
with his financial obligations. I would list your names but I am
real afraid of missing someone. THANKS
11/08/01
Hi, just wanted to do a quick update. Barkley gets mail and support
from all over. We would like to post them all here but it would just
take up too much room. However he did receive an email yesterday
that truly touched our hearts and we thought we would share it with
all of you. The author is a savior named Cindy in Gulfport,Miss.
I just adopted a boston terrier from
our local vet,and he to had been hurt by his owners, he had a broken
leg that has healed improperly so he does not walk right, and he was
infested with fleas,a nd severly under weight. I went in to adopt a
cat,and seen my Bugsy,This was on Sat. afternoon, i dreamed about
Sat,Sun.Mon.Tues.I prayed for this little guy,he was so horrible
looking,my 8yr.old son said mom he is so ugly,he doesn't walk
right, and he is skinny.I said i love him, god wants me to have him
and love him,for all
i see is his beauty,I called the vet this morning and said i want
him,he will forever be loved by me,and no more harm will come to
him.I called my groomer and they donated a day to being pampered,(
HE SMELLS WONDERFUL _ when they seen him they were almost in tears.
He is so far the most loyal, sweetest person i have known. He will be
my best friend for the rest of his life.I do not understand how
someone could do such harm to gods wonderful gifts to us. I wish i
could place every unwanted animal in a good loving home, but that
will just remain a dream. For now i have save the life of what some
would say a statisic,by in my eyes he is my pride and joy.I hope
Barkley gets a good home and thank god for you !Cindy
Gulfport,Mississippi.
We
say,"thank god for you too,Cindy".

"Hi guys. It's me Barkley. Well I'm doing real good now. I got over
that nasty pneumonia and I'm the terror I've always been. Sorry that
there hasn't been an update in awhile but dad's been lazy and has
not let me access the computer in awhile. Anyway we had a great time
at Thanksgiving. Us dogs could not have any of that great smelling
people food but mom made us some for dogs. We are sure looking
forward to Christmas because me and zoe and zack have all written to
Santa and told him what we want. I'm sure he'll come through for us.
I just got back from the lake and I sure had a good time there.
There's all these new smells and ducks to chase and new places too
explore. I always have a great time out there. Dad said he would
take me sailing except that there's nothing for me to hold onto and
I would slip and slide all over the place so I guess I really don't
want to go. It's fun just running around the docks anyway. Dad makes
me wear a lifejacket, of course, because he says that I swim like a
rock and he doesn't want to have to jump in the lake to save me
cause it's cold. Well mom said she's wants to put my Christmas
costume on so we can take a picture, so I'm going to go. I want to
say thank you to Cindy for adopting Bugsy. I'm sure he went to a
nice lady."
Bark is doing good as you can see. He still has the hack and runny
nose though and we are watching that closely. He and Zoe and Zack go
through this house like 3 tornadoes. Even when he is suppose to be
ill it's hard stopping that. Currently he is weighing in at just
over 27 pounds. He's slowed down finally. His coat is practically
grown in totally, as you can see, and he is just turning into such a
really great boston. Hopefully I can get in a sooner update next
time. He's really a cute little guy.

"Hi
guys. I'm so happy and I'm felling sooo good that I really don't
know what to say. Yesterday we all got to go out to the lake again
and we got to walk all over the place. We pulled mom and dad all
over the marina. Up the piers and down the piers. Mom says that I'm
so big that I can pull harder than Zoe and Zack together. There's so
many new things to see and smell out there that I can't even
describe it. That's my roomies in the picture above. That's Zoe on
the left and Zack in the middle. Mom says Zack is the maniac. He
thinks he's the boss but both of us are a little scared of Zoe. I
think she's really the boss but only when she wants to be. The
reason I'm feeling so good is is that I haven't been sick or feeling
bad in a long time, maybe my immune system is doing better. All
three of us are waiting on christmas to see what Santa is going to
bring us. Zoe and Zack have told me we have a friend in Houston that
is going to be here. His name is Teddy and he lives with dad's
sister. They say he really likes to run and that he's bigger than
all three of us put together. That's because he's a greyhound. He is
a rescue also. Well, I'm going to go now but I'll try to write a
little more before Christmas."
"Oh! I forgot to tell you that I'm up to 27.5 pounds. I guess mom is
right when she calls me her boston mastiff."
12/29/01
Hi everybody. Well everything is going great. I haven't been sick or
anything of late. I'm still a great big monster though. Santa was
real good to us guys, he brought us everything we asked for. I don't
know how I'm going to eat all these dog bones. Zack and Zoe are
going to help if I don't look out. Santa also brought us a surprise
present - her name is Katie - and she's only about 9 months old, and
only 12 pounds. It took us awhile to get to like each other but now
we are tearing up the house with each other. She's really a crazy
dog. Mom says we got her from a really nice lady that found her as a
stray. The lady, Christine, that found her really wanted to keep her
but she said it was just too much for her family. Anyway I'm glad
she's here because it just gives me another friend to play with. I
think me and Katie didn't get along at first because I'm so big. I
think maybe she was a little scared of me. Well, I don't know about
dad cause here I am trying to write to you guys and he keeps
growling and barking at me, like I don't pay him enough attention.
Man , humans are silly.. Well have a happy new year and I'll write
back later.
01/15/02
Hi, it’s me, Barkbark. Well it’s been awhile and all I can say is
that dad would just not let me on the keyboard. Since I talked to
you last a lot of stuff has been going on. The club got all new
officers and they are starting a new year with them. Everybody seems
to be happy with the new change. I have been doing really good
except that I’m still having to take a real low dose of steroids
every day because I just can’t get
rid of this hack. New news is that my friend Katie went to the vet
to get spayed and they got her all cut open and found out that she
had already been spayed. Nobody could see a scar or feel that this
had already occurred. The best thing about this though is that while
she was there mom and dad found her a forever home in Arlington, Tx..
I’m so glad she is going somewhere great. We also picked up another
new friend, Nikki, and she got spayed Monday. Mom says that she is
pretty sure she has already found her a forever home too. I can sure
tell you one thiugh and that’s, it sure isn’t nice having my two new
friends put where
I can’t play with them. They want to play and I want to play. I just
can’t see what the problem is but mom says it’s because of the
stitches. I’m glad Katie’s stitches are coming out on Friday because
that will give us one day to play together before she goes to her
new home. Zak and Zoe also want to play with Katie and Nikki but
they have to wait just like me. Until next time – byyyyyyyye
Barkbark
01/20/02
Ohhhhhhhh. I'm so sad but real glad at the same time. My beautiful
friend, Katie, is gone. She went to
her forever home yesterday. I just know she is going to like it
because mom says she's got another friend, Buddy, that she is going
to share it with. Anyway I've still got Nikki to go crazy with. She
will probably be able to really play hard about the middle of the
week. Just as soon as her stitches come out. I'm still doing good
but am still taking a steroid. Mom says she sure hopes it does'nt
make me get any bigger or they will have to buy a bigger house. She
calls me her gentle giant and her fair weather clown. Well I'm going
to go. See you later.
Barkbark
01/27/02
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mom took me to see Dr. Timm today because she had found a couple of
spots on me. Well they tested positive for mange. That means I’m
going to have to start getting dipped AGAIN. I didn’t do anything,
why is this happening. I’ve been a real good dog and I don’t deserve
this. Mom said that the doctor told her it might have happened
because of Nikki, cause I really loved her and now she’s gone to her
forever home. That maybe it was the stress I felt when she left.
This is not right, if all I did was love Nikki then why do I
get the nasty old mange back?
Anyway, my first dip is on Thursday and I know what that’s like. I
know I’m going to be feeling real bad after it’s over. It’s just not
fair.
Barkbark
02/09/02
Well guys, my dip for the mange went pretty good. I didn't get sick
from it or anything. Hopefully, I'll test negative when I go see Dr.
Timm on monday. Dad says that he thinks I've put on some weight
because of the steroid treatment I've been on, but I really do not
think so. I don't even think that I have any mange but Mom says I
still have to get the treatments as long as the doctor says I need
them. Dad also said that we were all going to the lake tomorrow and
that we were going to take some pictures. I've gotten a lot of email
saying ,''We want more pictures'' so I finally convinced Dad to do
it. We just love going out because of all the different people and
things we get to see.
Barkbark
02/11/02
Well I went back to the vet today and Dr. Timm said he could not
find any live mange mites on me but he did find a lot of dead ones.
In other words he wanted to dip me again. Mom said it was for the
best and they did it. The problem is that, unlike last time, this
time I'm feeling kind of bad aftrewards. I just wish this horrible
stuff would go AWAY. Doc Frances says that I may be troubled with it
forever. I sure hope not.
The other news I have to tell is that I'm up to 30 pounds and 7
ounces and mom says I haven't quit yet. I think at next years
Halloween party I'll not only win the prize for biggest ears but
I'll win for biggest butt too.
The bad news is that dad did not take anymore pictures and I'll have
to wait to show you how good I look.
Bye
Barkbark

03/12/02
Well, Barkley is doing fine , considering his relapse and treatment.
We had to have him dipped twice. The first dip went all right and
did not bother him at all but the second one knocked him down as
usual. What really upset us is the fact that he was only a couple of
weeks away from his scheduled four-month anniversity of testing
negative. This was required so that we could have him neutered.
After a discussion with Dr. Timm we all decided that we would wait a
couple of weeks more and then do the procedure.
Barkley was neutered yesterday and seems to be doing great. Our
biggest concern now however is – will he relapse. With the shock to
his immune system this causes, this is a very common occurrence. As
you can see he looks very good. We hope and pray that he will
continue his progress.
There is something else we would like to relate to you and that is
that after having this guy around for the last 8 months has been a
real learning experience for the both of us. Barb and myself have
decided that there in NO WAY we are going to let him go anywhere
except to bed. He has become such a part of our family we could in
no way let him be adopted out. I guess this is no surprise to many
of you. Hugs.
I’m sorry that I have not updated this page in some time and will
try to be timelier in the future.
04/20/02
Hi, everybody. Well I
guess you all know by now that mom and dad decided that I was just
too great a dog to go any where else. All they had to do was ask. I
new all along that they were going to keep me, so did they. They
call me their jello-man(?), and their doggy clown. Anyway,I am
weighing in now at just a little more than 32 pounds and my coat has
finally changed from a little rough to a really soft nature. You
really can not tell that I ever had the MANGE. Mom has taken me back
to the vet 3 times, though, because of some little bare spots on my
skin and I have tested negative every time. Mom and dad say that’s
the best news ever.
The bad news is that I
have a new friend, Paco,
and he has the mange almost as bad as I did. Me and the other guys
have to be real careful when we play with him or we make him bleed.
really doesn’t want to play too much now anyway. I feel real bad for
him because I know how it is. His picture
just doesn’t show how red he is. We all know that he is going to be
alright in the end and that he is going to be some bodies special
gift so get your application in now.
Thanks
for your support,
Roy & Barbara

Here's a short update
we submitted to the Boston Magazine. I just hope Natalie uses it.
Hi, folks. This is a
follow up on Barkley. Hopefully you all remember this beast. Barkley
has topped out at a whopping 32 pounds. Barb and I call him our
Boston mastiff. He seems to have recovered completely from the
horrible state that he was in when he first came into our system. He
does however still seem to have a slight respitory problem. He gets
to hacking at times and we just try to keep an eye on him.
Ok, enough said about
that. What we want to do here is tell you that Barkley has found his
forever home. Barb and I adopted him. Over the months of treatment
this guy really captured our heart. He is a great addition to our
menagerie and we are grateful to have him. He has turned into the
biggest clown you have ever seen. It’s not that he tries; it’s just
a part of his personality. Bark can just be sitting there with a
ball in his mouth and have the most silly look on his face that you
just have to laugh. He sleeps a lot with the upper part of his body
on the recliner and his feet on the floor. We really are not
accustomed to a mutt of his size. His favorite pastime is nursing on
his kong. We have found these to be one of the best toys around and
highly recommend them. Some of his other pastimes include running
through the puddles(he REALLY likes this), picnics at the lake,
getting into his pool, and going crazy with his buds. Fortunately he
always has plenty of friends to play with.
Through out his
extended recovery Barkley really amazed us with his strength and
fortitude. We are so glad he had that little glimmer of life in his
eye that kept us from putting him down in the beginning. Believe me,
this was very seriously discussed because of the severe condition he
was in. Everyone that comes into contact with him falls immediately
in love with him. Sometimes he seems aggressive to bigger dogs and
barks at them but we have come to understand that all he is doing is
saying, here I am. When he barks like this he gets totally airborne
with each bark Barkley wants to thank each and everyone of you for
your prayers, support, and emails through out his recovery. He has
gotten email from all over the world. Hopefully his story has made a
difference in the lives of some other pet and pet owner.
We currently have
another wonderful rescue that is almost as bad off as Barkley was.
We still ask ourselves, why. Why, would anyone let an animal get to
this point? Maybe they think we like picking up a pet and have it
bleed on us as it’s skin ruptures. We could all preach for hours on
that subject so I’ll leave it alone.
04/15/03
I know,
I know…….
Due to
popular demand, I’ll sit down and do an update on Barkley. This guy
continues to be one of the best pets we have ever had. He is still
averaging
between 30-32 pounds. As far as we can tell, at this
point, he does not have any lasting effects from his ordeal. Barkley
just turned the ripe old age of two and sees many more birthdays in
the years to come. We recently had a spring fling, Mardi Gras,
picnic and he barked at everyone and their dogs. Here’s a picture of
him in his Easter bonnet. I’m not at all sure if he likes it.
Barkley
has sure been a help to us in socializing the 30-40 fosters we have
had go through our abode since he came to us. Every time we bring in
another he says ‘’oh boy, another toy’’ and proceeds to get to know
them. At first many of them are some what intimidated because of his
size and manner, but soon realize he’s nothing but a cream puff.
I’ll
try and get him to say a few words in the next update, which I hope
will not be that far in the future.
08/05/03
WOW!!!!
I can’t believe it!!!
I’ve owned Mom and Dad for two
years already. I got them on Augusta 9, 2001. I’m sure glad they
were around because I’d be dead now if they had not rescued me. They
are so nice, I’ve got them trained just the way I like.
Anyway, enough about
them, I’m doing great and I’m still weighing in at a slim 32 pounds
and there isn’t any fat on me. I’m just a big ole stocky guy. About
the only thing that’s been wrong with me lately is this silly ole
stye I got in my right eye. Mom’s putting stuff in it and it’s a lot
better now.
You know, since I came to
live here I’ve had over 50 friends. Sometimes they stay for awhile
and we get to know ea ch
other real good. Like Snorty, he was here for at least 2 months and
we got to get to play all the time. A lot of the time him and me and
Zack would play together. We’d drive mom and dad crazy with all the
noise we would make. They said, they were going to have to get an
amp for the TV cause we were so loud they couldn’t hear over us. We
were always pullin on the rope or chasing each around makin all
kinds of racket. But Snorty went to his forever home last Saturday.
I sure hope he likes it there. Mom says she’s going to pick me and
Zack up another friend right now. Somebody moved and left their 2
year old at the old house. Why are people so MEAN? I have another
friend here,Penny, that’s about 7 and only weighs about 11 pounds.
Every time somebody bends over to give her some lovin she starts
shaking and groveling on the floor likes she’s afraid. Mom and dad
say it’s because she’s been hit a lot. Why are people so MEAN?
Penny’s the sweetest little dog, we just can’t understand how she
could do anything to make someone hit her. Why are people so MEAN?
Do you have an answer. I’d like to know also why people breed us
just to make some money. We don’t need anymore bostons. There are
too many of us without homes and that need to be adopted to breed
any more.
Well I’m goin to go and get
ready for our next rescue friend. Boy, is he goin to be surprised
when he meets us. We just luv new toys.
Barkley
July
2007
Well
it's been a long time since I came back here to let everyone
know how I am doing. It has been very busy around
here & mom & dad
don't let me on the computer very often. We have had so many
playmates come & go in the last four yrs. There was AJ,
he got distemper from the shelter but mom & dad pulled
him through it. He is a great little brother as he stayed
here with us since he has some
neurological problem. That doesn't stop him though. He likes
to play a lot by himself because sometimes we get to rough
for him.
He shakes his rabit & throughs it in the air & runs around
the yard like a rocket. Right now we have Precious, she came
to us with all her legs broken & a crushed pelvis. She had
to have lots of surgery & has to swim in the bathtub to help
build up her muscles so she won't break any more bones. She took
a couple
of steps today, yeah. Well I better go for now, I will try to
get mom & dad to let me on here more often. Until then
hope all you Boston pups out there have a great summer.
Barkley
February
2008
Hi
everyone. Here it is February 2008 I can't believe it. I
will be seven yrs old on the 18th. It's hard to believe I've
been with mom & dad for six & a half yrs. We've had
lots of fun & some sadness. Precious went to the Rainbow
Bridge because she had a bone disease that made her bones
very easy to break. She could just move wrong & break
a leg. We really miss her & wish she could have gotten
better. Alex, Buddy & Gabby also went to join Percious.
They must all be playing & running in the fields all
well & having a great time. We just got a new little
girl Lily, she is only four months old & she came from
a puppymill. She has kennel cough & only weighs 6 lbs.
She is a cutie. Well gotta go for now. Have a nice Valentine's
day.
Barkley
February 14th, 2009 - "Hi everyone, here
it is valentine's day again. These yrs just keep getting faster & faster.
I will be 8 on wednesday the 18th. It's now me & Zack & A.J. our Zoe went
to the Rainbow Bridge. We sure do miss her but we know she is in a better
place now. We have two foster doggies right now that have Mast Cell Cancer,
BooBoo & Carli.
They are both doing very well & hopefully will have a long time before they
will join all the other baby's that have gone before them. I hope everyone
has a happy Valentine's day. See you soon. |
